P146 50 Years Ago March 30, 1967 Gary Nixon in full form was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. The Triumph-mounted Nixon won the Daytona 200, and he made history by being the first rider ever to win the 200 and the 250cc Lightweight 100-miler in the same weekend. Buddy Elmore was second in the 200, also on a Triumph… Nixon, however, fell to Ronnie Rall at the Daytona Short Track at Memorial Stadium… J.N. Roberts won the Hi Vista Hare Scrambles in the California high desert. 40 Years Ago March 23, 1977 Our coverage of the Daytona 200 was featured on the cover 40 years ago, and our main cover line read: Steve Baker Wins Everything At Daytona. Baker, who was the man on the cover, scored a $20,000 paycheck for his efforts… Bob Hannah was the big winner at the Daytona Supercross, and we noted that he was riding a "stock" Yamaha YZ250—tuned by Keith McCarty… Back in California, we covered Larry Roeseler's win at the Desert Squirrels' Hare & Hound… Gary LaPlante won the V.O.T.E. Two-Day Trials in California. 20 Years Ago March 19, 1997 Yamaha-mounted Scott Russell won the Daytona 200 for a record fourth time and was pictured on the cover 20 years ago… Jeff Emig won the Daytona Supercross for the first time, finishing ahead of Greg Albertyn and Jeremy McGrath… Terry Poovey returned to the top step of the podium for the first time in 12 years after winning the Daytona Short Track… We reported the death of three-time Daytona 200 winner Roger Reiman who was killed in a three-rider accident while practicing for the BMW Battle of the Legends race at Daytona. Emig won the Mini Stock (14-16) and Mini Open classes; Kevin Windham won the Mini Jr. (6-8) class… Paul Krause and Dan Ashcraft battled it out at the Wild Hare Hare & Hound at Lucerne, and Krause won it by a "hare."
