50 Years Ago March 23, 1967
Our Daytona preview issue hit the stands 50 years ago, but our cover photo
was of Clem Johnson who we said was the first man to "crank off 160 mph
in the quarter mile"… As far as our Daytona preview, our featured article was
titled: "How To Watch A Motorcycle Race," and we also listed all of the
factory teams for the 200, which included Triumph, Honda, BSA and Harley-
Davidson… We had race coverage of the AMA National Championship Hare
Scrambles in Ridgecrest, California. Steve Hurd
won riding a Matchless.
40 Years Ago March 16, 1977
The Daytona 200 was just around the corner and we asked the question:
Who will Daytona let win?... We featured an interview with motocrosser Marty
Moates who just landed a factory ride with the Spanish manufacturer Ossa…
The AMA Supercross Series got underway in Atlanta. Nearly 46,000 fans
came out and watched Bob Hannah come away with the win after passing Jim
Pomeroy, who had stalled his Bultaco, 40 feet before the checkered flag… We
tested a Yoshimura-modified GS750 Suzuki.
20 Years Ago March 12, 1997
We featured Kenny Roberts in action on his new creation, the Modenas KR3,
on the cover 20 years ago. We had an in-depth interview with Roberts about
his new grand prix road racer and racing plans… We had coverage of the
opening round of the 125/250cc AMA National MX Series from Gainesville,
where Jeff Emig took the 250cc-class victory and Ricky Carmichael the
125cc-class victory. It was Carmichael's first outdoor win of his career… We
took a look back on the racing career of legendary motocrosser Marty Smith.

30 Years Ago March 18, 1987
Our Daytona issue hit the stands 30 years ago, and Wayne Rainey was
featured on the cover for winning the fastest-ever Daytona 200. Rick Ryan also
got a piece of the cover for winning the Daytona Supercross and being the first
privateer to ever win a Supercross race. Other Daytona winners included Kork
Ballington in the 250 Grand Prix, Steve Martin in the AMA Hare Scrambles
opener and Steve Morehead in flat track. Kevin
Hines won the Alligator Enduro, as did Bevo
Forte in the Vintage class.
