We were so impressed by a parking lot full of motorcycles that we put a photo
of it on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. And where were all of the motor-
cycle's owners? Watching the TT at Ascot Park. Skip Van Leeuwen was the big
winner and went home $1650 richer… A headline on the cover read: Trouble On
The Trails. The Sierra Club was on the attack and we were fighting back… We
covered the Bakersfield Hillclimb.

We tested the Yamaha TT500 that was pictured in action on the front page 40
years ago. We called it a "super play bike"… Danny LaPorte, Bob Hannah and
Rick Burgett were the stars of the Florida Winter-AMA MX at Orlando Sports
Center… We featured a story about how supercross announcer Larry Huffman,
friend Al Martinez and speedway racer Harry Oxley and his son, Brad, went
for a casual fun trail ride in Baja, but it turned into a story of survival.
20 Years Ago March 5, 1997
A photo of the Hunwick Hallam Boss Power Cruiser that we tested was
featured on the cover… Damon Huffman also got a piece of the cover for
nabbing his first career supercross victory in the premier 250cc class at
Atlanta; Ricky Carmichael won the 125cc class… The Quicksilver Enduro
in California was the opening round of the AMA National Championship and
Ty Davis came away with the win; it was also Randy Hawkins' first race on a
Yamaha… We interviewed motocrosser Nathan Ramsey.

as one with Wayne Rainey… Rick Johnson and George Holland fired the
first shots of the 1987 AMA 125/250cc National Championship MX Series at
Gatorback… We tested the 1987 Husqvarna 250 Enduro… Garth Sweetland
won the D-38 King of the Desert… We took a
close-up look at Chris Carr's Wood Rotax 250
GP road racer.
