MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES, AN FIM WORLD
ROUND 8 / FEBRUARY 25, 2017
GEORGIA DOME / ATLANTA, GEORGIA
P52
Dungey, Tomac still finished just
1.5 seconds behind Dungey.
Although he wanted the win, it
was a good way to finish after
long night. A bad start in his heat
race led to him having to qualify
for the main through the semis.
His average lap time was a little
over a half-second quicker than
Dungey's in the main, and he
had the quickest lap of the race
with a 51.926; Dungey's best
was 52.591.
"That was tough there, you
know?" Tomac said. "I didn't
this week right away. That was
good. I was able to really drive
off of that gate good and hold it
on to the corner, and the guys
shot wide and I tucked under,
and I got the holeshot. That's
always awesome. This track was
key for that. Last week, too, and
the week before. Everybody's
doing the same thing and it's
very hard to really make a lot of
time on the guys. So, we got up
front and pushed the pace, and I
saw Eli, but the track was nasty.
There wasn't a smooth spot on
the track, and with these longer
motos, it's rough. But a win's a
win. It feels great."
Despite starting well behind
Tomac made quick work of
Bogle for fourth, and then Seely
for third, and sat 10 seconds
behind Dungey and five seconds
behind Baggett. Tomac closed
the gap on Baggett and dove
to the inside after the finish-line
jump to snatch second. Although
Tomac was the fastest guy on
the track late in the race, he
simply didn't have time to chase
Dungey down.
"The start, for sure," Dungey
said. "We were able to make a
couple adjustments during the
week—nothing crazy; nothing
internal—just more external stuff,
switching up the balance of the
bike, and that really helped me
Eli Tomac was the fastest on the
track but a bad start in the main had
him playing catch up all race long.
