IN THE WIND P36 becoming the first Latvian to ever win an MX World Champi- onship GP. Jonass swept every single race, including Friday's qualifying race and both motos on Saturday to lead the points standings heading to round two in Indonesia. Jonass, however, had to fend off a pesky Benoit Paturel in both motos. The Kemea Yamaha rider from France hounded Jonass for much of the night and ended up going 2-2 on the day, just ahead of LRT KTM's Julien Lieber, who was impressive en route to a pair of third-place finishes. Husqvarna rider Thomas Kjer Olsen went 4-4 for fourth overall, while Suzuki's Jeremy Seewer had to be satisfied with fifth overall with a 12-5 result. He was a victim of a crash in the first moto. Jonass's teammate, and ex- pected championship contend- er, Jorje Prado Garcia struggled on race day, starting just behind his teammate in moto one and fading to seventh at the finish. In moto two, Garcia started sixth, then faded again, eventu- ally finishing 11th. His 6-11 score was only good enough for eighth on the day. American Thomas Covington (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) showed good speed in Qatar. He finished eighth in the first moto and nabbed the holeshot in the second. He drifted back to fifth where he stayed for quite some time before dropping out with a mechanical problem. Another American, Dar- ian Sanayei (Monster Energy Kawasaki) went 10-12 for ninth overall.
