We tested the Ossa Desert Phantom 250, which was pictured leaping off
a seemingly un-survivable cliff. At the controls was CN guest test rider Ron
Rigler. We said that the Ossa was a "logical step up for the playbiker who's
bored with playbikes." It sold for $1595… We reported that Hideo "Pops"
Yoshimura—of the Yoshimura fame—was injured in a fire that gutted his dyno
room while testing a 1000cc Kawasaki road racer… Danny LaPorte, Bob
Hannah and Rick Burgett were the big winners at the Florida Winter-AMA
MX Series at Gainesville.

The AMA/MBNA Superbike National Championship got underway at
Phoenix International Raceway. Ducati's Mat Mladin fired the first shot;
Pascal Picotte won the 600cc Supersport race… Jeff Emig won the Indy
Supercross; Jeremy McGrath was still looking for his first win of the year on
his new Suzuki (but he did get his first heat-race victory).
