P114 50 Years Ago February 22, 1967 We were pretty excited about drag racing in our latest issue of Cycle News 50 years ago. We featured drag racing on the cover and a pictorial from Stardust International Raceway in Las Vegas, Nevada… The American Federation of Motorcyclists began its racing season at Cotati Raceway, where Art Baumann claimed the big wins… We ran a spy photo of Honda's newest creation—the CL90 Scrambler… We also showed you a photo of the new Super-Steen Ace 90, aka SS Hodaka. 40 Years Ago February 23, 1977 Road racing, desert racing and motocross were featured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Reg Pridmore was caught in action at Ontario Motor Speedway, as well as Mike Purdy at the Parker 400 (won by Larry Roeseler and Rolf Tibblin) and motocrossers from Carlsbad… California Recreational Trials Committee heard comments from both motorcyclists and "motorcycle haters" regarding proposals for three new OHV parks in California: Hungry Valley (Gorman), Ritter Ranch (Palmdale) and Potrero (Beaumont)… Bruce Ogilvie won the Moose Run Hare & Hound. 20 Years Ago February 19, 1997 Kenny Roberts took the cover off the three-cylinder Modenas KR3 grand prix bike, which made our cover; the bike was a collaboration between Marlboro Team Roberts and Modenas, a Malaysian manufacturer of 110cc street bikes. The bike was built in Robert's facility in Banbury, England... Ty Davis was also on the cover for topping the Adelanto Grand Prix… Alan Cathcart tested Mick Doohan's Honda NSR500 GP bike… Mike Lafferty won the Loretta Lynn's ISDE Qualifier… We made our 1997 AMA Superbike predictions: Our pick for the title was Mat Mladin. Kyle Lewis won the 125cc main for the first time and was, at that time, the youngest rider ever to do so, but he had little time to celebrate. He learned after the race that his father, Matthew, had suffered a heart attack during the race and later passed away… We interview road racer Calvin Rayborn III… Sal Hoffman won the Cow Palace TT in San Francisco.
