50 Years Ago February 16, 1967
Fifty years ago, we featured a falling Steve McLaughlin at a Carlsbad road race
on the cover in our latest 15-page issue of Cycle News. Dave Damron (left)
and Walt Fulton (66R) are also pictured in the photo. Some of the racers who
competed that day were Bill Manley, Gene Romero, Eddie Wirth and Dave
Smith… We reported that the AMA's rule-forming body needed a complete
overhaul after a special four-person committee studied the structure of the
present Competition Committee.
40 Years Ago February 16, 1977
Bob Hannah was featured on the cover 40 years ago to accompany our
interview with the hot new rising star of motocross and his tuner, Bill Buchka…
One of our feature stories was our coverage of the Gold Rush Enduro in
Lucerne Valley, California. Mike Hannon appeared to have zeroed the course
but lost his scorecard… Tom Brooks won the DRA hare scrambles in the SoCal
desert, taking the checkered flag three minutes ahead of his brother, Cordis…
Bob Hannah won the opening round of the Florida Winter AMA MX Series in
Jacksonville.
20 Years Ago February 12, 1997
Doug Henry made front-page news for winning the Seattle Supercross. It
was his second victory in a row… Ty Davis was also featured on the cover
for winning the AMA National Hare & Hound opener at Lucerne… We had an
interview with motocrosser Kyle Lewis who had just solidified a ride with Suzuki
of Japan to compete in the Japanese National MX Series… Mick Doohan and
Honda set the pace at the IRTA Grand Prix test in Australia… Ricky Carmichael
starred at the Florida Winter AMA MX in Gainesville.

Our 1987 Kawasaki KX250 test bike was featured on the cover 30 years
ago… The AMA announced the creation of the AMA Brighter Image Awards…
Jeff Ward extended his lead over Keith Bowen in the AMA/Coors Supercross
Series with a runaway win at the Houston Astrodome. He finished 25 seconds
ahead of Bowen. Keith Turpin won the 125cc class… Garth Brow won the
AMA Invitational Indoor Pro Ice Race in Troy,
Ohio… The Dan Smith/Larry Roeseler duo won
the SCORE Parker 400.
