his lap time down to a 1:00.984
on his first full lap out front. For
perspective, Dungey's lap time
that lap was a 1:04.219, and the
second-fastest time in the entire
field on that lap—lap 18—was a
over 1.5 seconds, and it took
him almost no time to catch the
defending champ. Once on
Dungey's rear tire, Tomac bided
his time, then struck at his first
opening, snatching the lead
away from Dungey, and then de-
moralizing the champ by besting
closing the distance on Webb in
second. Once by Webb through
the tricky double-dragon-back
section, Tomac was about six
seconds behind Dungey, and
there were only seven laps left in
the race. But on lap 14, Tomac's
lap time bested Dungey's by
Dungey held the lead
for much of the race
but even he couldn't
keep Tomac at bay.
