"Who, what, when, where"— and the same can still be said 50 years later. It's
what Cycle News was all about and still is…. We reported that 300 Yamaha
dealers met in Las Vegas to be introduced to seven new models; sales of Ya-
maha motorcycles had doubled every year since Yamaha started importing the
brand to the U.S. in 1958… Indoor short track racing in Long Beach, Califor-
nia, was still going strong… One of our feature stories was our coverage of the
Ponderosa desert scrambles.

We had a little bit of everything—MX, speedway, flat track, test bikes—on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago… John Hately was the big winner at the
Houston TT held inside the Astrodome, and Jay Springsteen topped the short
track at the traditional Houston doubleheader… We race-tested the Maico
AW-250 motocrosser. We said it was a world-class race bike that will make you
a better racer. It retailed for $1784… We checked in with the progress of Ken
Maely's American-built race engine for speedway.

Emig became the third different winner of the AMA Supercross Series when
he topped the Arizona round at Sun Devil Stadium… We reported that long-
time Kawasaki MX/SX team manger Roy Turner was leaving the team… Alan

The California helmet law was the hot topic 30 years ago and an illustration
of the Statue of Liberty, with a tear running down her face, was on the cover to
accompany our report on the issue… The opening round of the AMA/Coors
Supercross Series got underway at Anaheim Stadium, where Jeff Ward came
away with his first ever Anaheim victory. Jeff Matiasevich won the 125cc class…
Jo Jo Keller, Bob Hannah and Guy Cooper
were the big winners at the Florida Winter AMA
