Mever could only get third in the final go, with Gamble again second and Derrick winninl{ it for fIrst overall. Steve Gunderson (Hon) took the fIrst 250 Amateur moto, followed by Ed Rutlege and Carl Starzyk, also on Hondas. Bill Ruckley put bis Bultaco in fll'st for tbe second moto, but Rutledge again took second, wbicb was good for first overall. Tbe Open Amateurs repeated their first moto sbowings, with fIrSt going to Ed Macarage (Hus) followed by Jay Magmum (Mai) and Jeff Randall (Suz). Now it was the Pros' tum and fll'st on the line were the-one-two-fives. Arizona's Gary Hickerson (Hus) beld the series' lead, two points abead of Californian Larry Watkins on a Tyran. Also on a Tyran was Frank Giardina, but tbe California team was caught napping and found themselves last out of the gate. Mike Goodrich and Ricb Davis put their Hondas up front while Watkins and Giardina made their way through the pack, with Watkins overtaking Davis for second, behind Goorich, and Giardina finishing fourth. The Cal kids made up for their frrst Eric Blatt leads but Frank iardina (21) got by fOt' the overall Open win. Danny Croyle (179) was second. By E. C. Birt PHOENIX, ARIZ., DEC. 2 Round Two of the Phoenix senes was a mudder, but the third meet- ing was a duster. No one can say it lacked variety, and this next-to- last round in the series saw some fine competition. Kevin Marinovich continued his domination of the 125 Beginner ranks by winning the third meet in a row. Patrick Runey (Suz) was second overall. Bernie Dugas had been second 250 Beginner the week before and won the fIrst moto today. But in the second go he tangled with Tom Benedict's Honda, getting his foot caught inside the shock absorber. With both Dugas and Benedict out, the overall win went to Richard Anthony (Yam) and second to Dan Martinez (CZ). Arno Brittain (Yam) and Tom Scrivner (Hus) spli t wins in the Open Beginner, with the second moto win and overall going to Scrivner. Price Combs (Suz) was third. In the 125 Novice class it was Dennis Herrera and Kevin Nelson putting their Hondas 1-2 in both motos for the same overall placing. Mike Cachero (Hon) logged third. The fint nine bikes across the line in the second moto were 125 Elsinores. Marty Haak took his Husky to two wins in the 250 Novice class. Brian Goodby (Hon) was second. The Open Novice motos were duplicates, with Rick Bomar (Mai) taking two firsts and Jerry Canonic (Mai) logging two second places. CZ-mounted Bill Peterson was third. The nrst 125 Amateur moto went to Bill Mever (Hon), with Tim Gamble N_ point leader in the 125 class, Larry Watkins heads the field. bad start by going to the front in the second moto, but Giardina soon retired with loose handlebars. Mike Goodrich was second followed by Gary Hickerson (Hus). Watkins again wired the circuit in the showdown moto, with Goodrich again second and Hickerson third. Watkins' overall win put him into the series point lead. Chuck Lampe (Mai) had been having I some bad luck early in the series, but today he won the nrst 250 moto all the way. Bob Wharton (Hus) was second followed by Larry Watkins (Ric). Watkins took the lead in the second moto but fouled a plug and dropped out. Lampe passed Wharton to take over fIrst for the win, and Jeff Billote also got by to take second. Lampe also wired the third moto, with Wharton getting second and Billotte third. . Frank Giardina and David Anderegg put their Maicos out front in the first Open moto and stayed in that order. Third went to Steve Strasser of Tucson. Ron Cowles (CZ) won the second moto, with Danny Croyle (Mai) second and Bob Wharton third. Giardina was fourth with a broken footpeg. Giardina had to win the last moto for overall, and had to get by Eric Blatt (Hus) to do it. They rode super tight for fIve laps, with Croyle sneaking up closer in third. Then Blatt drifted a little and Giardina and Croyle both slipped by. Croyle did everything he could to get by for the win, but Giardina beld on for fll'St Qverall. The score is now California-2, Arizona-I, with the fma! event of the series coming up.
