(Hon), ruled the 80cc Minibike (13 and over) class with great ease. And a brief peak at Novice winners: Myerscough, mounted on a Honda, zapped the 100 Novice class by 28 points over second-placer K. Kamo (Suz); Ed Boggs (Hon), won 125 Novice; Mark Lange (Hon), 125 Novice, under 16; Robert Jenston (Yam), 250 Novice; and John Lewis (Mail. deadlocked with Wayne Brown (Mai), at Open Novice. A near-tragic spill at the finish line actually resulted in the deadlock, when judges were unable to pin[lOint the Lewis crash site, deciding upon the tie' as the answer. As for Lewis, he would up in Golden State Hospital in Newhall with a fractured pelvis - there were no complaints about the tie. As for Veteran competition, Gary Cole (Mail. Open Veteran, and Joe Phillips (CZ), 250 Veteran, were both grand-slam winners, while a real battle developed in 125 Veteran. Leon Beauchemin (Hon), just aced out AI Perez (BuI), for first place honors, compiling 900 points on three straight second places, while Perez opened with a "DNF", the grabbed two straight first place to make it interesting with 800 points. ~ MVMCMX By Gus SUNNYMEAD, CAL., DEC. 1 The rain held off until the races were over. With the cool weather, the track stayed in perfect condition. Hye McCall completely domi- nated the Open Beginner class with three firsts. Going into the last moto four people were tied for second place, Gary Livengood, Chuck SickJor, Andre Butcher and Wayne Cope, but in the fmish it was Chuck who came up with the second place trophy. Roger Stagg and Doug Stagg battled it out for first place in the Open Junior class, but in the end it was Roger who came in with frrst. Doug took second and Roger Heath, third. Timothy Jones led in the first 250 Beginner class, but fell and was unable to catch up again. Sam Easterday then took over the lead and held it to the end followed by, Randy Lutz and R. Fawcett. The second moto Jones made up for the first moto by getting frrst. Lutz took second and this time Easterday took third. In the last moto Sam came on strong and again took first followed by Jones and Lutz. John Ward won all three motos in the 250 Junior class. Randy Rios took second with three seconds, and Gregg Mini Beginner class. Joe Nist took second. Nist had the lead in the last moto but was involved in a pile up with Shea and Frank Spangler. Shea got his scooter going frrst and took over the lead. The 100 Beginner class was won by Mark Allee with three firsts. Everyone in the class kept the same place each moto. Alvin Long took second on a Yamaha, foUowed by Joe Spangler on his XR75. Dave Murphy won the 100 Junior class with three firsts. J obn Green took second on his Yamaha. The Powder Puff class won won by Marilyn McGowen on her Suzuki, with three firsts. Debbie Lutz took second on her Yamaha. a Baymare reopening By John Huetter SOMJS, CAL., DEC. 9 Bayrnare's reputation was enough to draw a very respectable turnout to its re-opening under new pro· motion. The fact that .it had been granted an AMA motocross National led a lot of racers to hope the course would also be authentic motocross. But we pass· ed the ambulance going the other way as we IUt sign-in and that set the tone for the day. Disappointment. There was no other feeling so prevalent in those who like the challenge of motocross and remember the courses that have been laid out in the valley at Baymare. There were no natural terrain obstacles left on the new course and only two places where it was even necessary (or expedient) to stand up. Baymare, today, had become another SoCal motocross:f1at track. The Anthill - gone. Banzai Hill - Rone. The flat out jump- gone.Additions included a mound bulldozed up in what had previously been part of the pits. It was inconsequenrial. There was not a jump on the course, unless you lifted your front wheel on the tunnel bump. It was a horsepower course and required no particular skill to ride it. It required flat track skills to ride it fast and National No. 64 Gary Scott looked right at home out there. Jim Weinert has said, "We're never gonna beat the Europeans if all we ride is scrambles tracks." Bayn=e seems to be once again a scrambles track which is all right'if you like scrambles but disappointing if you went to race motocross. The terrain is all there for a vertical course and slow-you·down, berm·building turns through the trees. If it was largely ignored in an attempt to draw Beginners to a non-challenging motorcycling situation, it is a sad trend to continue in sportsman motocross. The ambulance rolled twice before racing even started, reflecting a track that was too fast for its surface condition (dust and pebbly sand). Even Experts were sliding out in comers that were picking up black rubber marks. But the cherry-picking in most Beginner and Novice classes was so blatant that a lot of the Experts were leading those motos, too. The original idea of running Novice in the morning and the Am/Ex classes in the afternoon was a good one. But It was unrealistic to Lusher took third with three thirds. Dave Hopkins won the 250 Senior/Expert class on his Penton. Herb Carbaugh won the 125 Junior class with a second and two firsts. Doug McGowen on his Suzuki took second. Carbaugh beat him out by one point for first place. Tom Burt took third on his Honda. Steve Bauer won the 125 Senior/Expert class on a Honda. Dwayne (Flash) Vanderby won the 175 Junior class on his Yamaha. Mike Shea won all three motos in the expect eight classes of Beginner/Novice races to complete three 2D-minute motos by I p.m. Simple arithmetic would show it just can't happen. The resultant two 15-minute motos on a track where the start proved to be the whole race did not provide $8 worth of racing. Many other tracks are no better in this regard. We just expected Baymare to be. Thousands of feet of new snow fence and several tons of dumped sand do not make a motocross circuit. Imaginative use of challenging terrain does, in the opinion of most riders. Nobody wants to see a motocross cour e die. especially when the whole sport may be in jeopardy. Make it vertical again and let the course challenge the mQ.!.oCToss racer, not cater to the non-racer. Results in that section.
