If we were to go ahead and race without licenses, it would cost the promoters $80.00 per night for each of us for a one nigh t sanction, so th~ promoters weren't going to let us race until the problem was solved. This wasn't very pleasant with us after traveling 8,000 miles to race for our country, and something had to be done about it, so we arranged a meeting with the SCB to try and settle the problem. First we brought up that early this year we had raced in several _.AND II MOTORCYCLE e; AUTOMOTIVE .~...;,/«1~ . THOUSANDS Of USED & NEW ~PARTS& <'c::~ O"'~0.ftE! L-__~~~_.I International Speedway meetings in Daytona Beach, Florida, and in order to race in the meetings we needed valid International licenses. The reason was that there were three International riders: Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs and Bert Harkins, otherwise we would have not needed the licenses. This would have solved the problem but we had only received National licenses and not International licenses, so it ended up that we left for Australia without the International licenses, not knowing that we needed them. Secondly we brought up that in the . FlM rule book it states that if less than three riders travel internationally you don't need an International license anyway, and the fact is that we were only traveling individually and not as a team. We also hold valid American Speedway licenses, and bought Australian licenses as well. So we called the AMA and told them our problem and kindly enough they are working on it for us, and everything now seems to be going well. U.sA. The best pairs match was held at Newcastle speedway, which is a \4 mile track and the cushion is very heavy. Most of the speedway tracks here are heavy, unlike the tracks in America, The meeting went very well for us, as we won the match 18 to 14. This was kind of a shock to the spectators as well as the .riders and promoter. Mainly because we had raced there two weeks before on borrowed bikes and dido't do so well. But this time we had our own bikes and a few meetings under our belts. So as it lurned out, Steve, after having bike troubles. still scored six points plus three bonus points, and I had scored a twelve point maximum. We were quite happy about this, not only because we had won the meeting but because it was the first time Americans had ever won any kind of a best pairs meeting in Australia. Liverpool May Reopen Because of an accident involving speedway star Gary Hay at Liverpool Speedway in N.S.W. a season al(o, arrived a couple In of were informe'd by the Australian promoter Frank Oliver was forced to shut down to bikes because of law suits. At the present time there are only two tracks running in N.S.W., the Sydney Showground on Saturday and Newcastle on Friday. With Liverpool Speedway possibly reopening it would give a great boost to speedway in Austtalia. With former World Champion Ole Oleson due to arrive in Australia in early December, along with a touring English West team there should be some great events scheduled for Liverpool and the Showgrounds speedway. Then in early January there is a scheduled five-nation best pairs match at the Sydney Showground. It will include Great Britain, Australia; Poland, Russia and U.S.A., with the Poland and Russian teams arrving late December. And to all of you wonderful Cycle News readers, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
