P102 50 Years Ago February 2, 1967 We focused in on desert scrambles racing in our latest issue of Cycle News 50 years ago and local racer Lonnie Peterson was pictured on the cover… One of our feature stories was our coverage of the Sonora Motorcycle Club enduro; two weeks later, the results were still being tallied… Our Meet The Racer this week was Doug Showler who was ranked National #41 in flat track… Dana Point in California was a favorite place for SCTA trials riders to test their skills, but we reported that the area was about to be closed to motorcyclists for good. 40 Years Ago February 2, 1977 We reported that Superbowl of Motocross promoter Mike Goodwin had signed a contract with the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. to sponsor the Mr. Pibb Superbowl of Motocross… CN editor John Ulrich wrote about his first experience at the drag strip… We tested Husqvarna's 360 Automatic off-roader… The 1977 Camel Pro Series was about to fire up and we asked the question, who will win the championship? We wouldn't go out on a limb and make a prediction but did say, "…It will be dominated by a handful of names." 20 Years Ago January 29, 1997 All things sportbikes was the theme in issue #4 20 years ago. We tested the Honda VTR1000, Triumph T595, Laverda 668 and Yamaha YZF600, and we had an interview with Team Suzuki's Larry Pegram… Almost 50,000 fans filled the L.A. Coliseum for round two of the AMA Supercross Series. Doug Henry came away with the surprise win, his second on the Yamaha YZ400F four-stroke, but the race might be remembered most for 125cc winner Brian Deegan ghost riding his bike over a jump after taking the checkered flag.
