Our feature story 50 years ago was titled California's Only Motorcycle Park. We
were talking about The Motorcycle Run, locally known as "The Cycle Park,"
near Oakland, California, where motorcycles played. It was only 67 acres, but
motorcyclists loved it, so it was a popular place to ride… We also talked about
our experience of riding on the California freeways and coming away alive…
Butch Corder won the 250cc feature at the latest Long Beach Indoor Short
Track event. Jack O'Brien and Mert Lawwill
joined him on the podium.

We asked the question, "Is more of everything better?" regarding our Suzuki
RM125B test bike, which was pictured on the cover 40 years ago. In this case,
it was… We reported that Evel Knievel was going to sponsor flat track racer
Gary Scott… We had full race coverage of the UEA Silver Dollar Enduro.
Kenny Lewis Jr. was the overall winner… We talked shocks with Fox Shox'
Bob and Jeff Fox, creators of the Fox AirShox, which was the hot shock that
everyone wanted at the time.

Greg Albertyn was pictured on the cover for winning the opening round of the
AMA Supercross Series at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Defending
champ Jeremy McGrath made his Suzuki debut—it didn't go well. A couple
of run-ins with his former Honda teammate Steve Lamson the first lap of the
main resulted in a 15th place finish. It was, to that point, the worst SX placing
of his career, and it was the first time in four years that he did not lead the
championship… Alan Cathcart compared Aaron Slight's and Carl Fogarty's
Costrol Honda RC45.

We featured motocross racing from both coasts on the cover of Cycle News 30
years ago. Both the Florida Winter AMA MX and CMC Golden State MX Series'
were in full swing. Larry Brooks was the big winner at Carlsbad, California, and
Bob Hannah was still winning at Dade City, Florida… We took a close look at
one of motorcycle's latest inventions—anti-lock brakes, first used on a BMW
K100RT… We covered indoor ice racing from
Danville, Peoria. Dan Ingram was the winner.
