F IASCONARO TOPS
PRAIRIE CITY WHS OPENER
T
he opening round of the
Kenda/SRT AMA West Hare
Scramble Championship was
a wet one in Prairie City, Janu-
ary 15. But even in the muddy
conditions, riders seemed to
thoroughly enjoy the three-hour
race, hosted by the Polka Dots
M.C., that eventually saw Joey
Fiasconaro take the overall win
aboard his Six Five O Racing
KTM. Fiasconaro was joined on
the podium by Dare Denartile
and Justin Bonita.
"It's great to start off the 2017
season with a win at the Prairie
City Grand Prix," said Fiasco-
naro. "Conditions were a little
slick, but I held it steady for three
hours."
Beta rider Max Gerston con-
tested his first-ever West Hare
Scramble and came away with
a fourth-place finish, comment-
ing, "I wanted to do better but it
wasn't bad for a poor start and
nasty conditions. It was super
slick and muddy but I had fun.
But I'm not looking forward to
cleaning up after this race!"
It was a tough day for de-
fending WHS Champion Nick
Burson, who debuted his new
Purvines Racing Yamaha in
Prairie City. Burson ended up
fifth after an up and down day in
the mud.
"I pulled the holeshot and led
for a little bit, but once we hit
the mud holes, it seemed every
line I picked was bad," Burson
lamented. "I fell back to tenth
and charged the last hour back
up to fifth. We're getting better in
the mud but we still have some
learning to do!" CN
AMA SEEKS KNOWLEDGEABLE RIDERS
T
he Federal Highway Administration an-
nounced the establishment of a Motorcy-
clist Advisory Council. "The MAC will coordi-
nate with and advise the FHWA Administrator
on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcy-
clists, including: (1) barrier design; (2) road de-
sign, construction, and maintenance practices;
and (3) the architecture and implementation of
intelligent transportation system technologies."
Since the AMA expects to be involved with
the Motorcyclist Advisory Council and wishes
more riders to be part of the committee, the
AMA is asking its members who have specific
skill sets to contact them.
According to the FHWA notice, the MAC can
have as many as 10 members. One or more
members can qualify under "(2) State/Local
traffic and safety engineers, design engineers,
or other transportation department officials
who are motorcyclists."
The AMA says this is an opportunity to stack
the deck to ensure motorcyclists' voices are
heard on the advisory council. "We need
strong rider support on the various issues com-
ing before the Motorcyclist Advisory Council."
You can help by recommending to the AMA
knowledgeable riders on highway issues or
volunteering yourself.
Experience with local, state and federal
agencies will be helpful. If you are interested or
would like to recommend a friend, please con-
tact the AMA at grassroots@ama-cycle.org. CN
