There was plenty of local racing coverage in issue #2 50 years ago, like the
10
th
Annual Big Hare Run in the Southern California desert. Larry Bergquist,
riding a 650 BSA, took the win in the "long and rough" 75-mile race… We
covered road racing from Carlsbad Raceway, where Eddie Mulder and Bill
Manley battled it out. Manley's bike eventually called it quits and Mulder went
on to win… Northern California riders outdueled the Southern Californians at the
Long Beach Indoor Short Track.

If you owned a dirt bike, you had to get it to the races or your favorite riding
spot somehow, so we did a special issue focusing on vans, and what you
could do to them to make getting your bike there easier and more comfort-
able… Desert racing was in full force in California, and Bob Balentine and
Larry Roeseler were making the headlines… Yamaha announced its all-new
four-cylinder XS1000 with shaft drive. Yamaha also introduced its latest
DT400 dual sport bike with monoshock rear suspension system.

It was a very historic week in motorcycling. Jeremy McGrath was pictured on
the cover of CN 20 years ago. It was the first photo of the supercross champ
wearing yellow Suzuki gear after shocking the industry just a few days earlier—
and just two weeks from the start of the SX series—when he announced that he
had cut ties with Honda… Yamaha announced it was going to put Doug Henry
on a four-stroke MX bike—the YZM400F—and compete in the 250cc class in
the outdoor AMA MX Nationals, and select supercross races if he thought the
bike was good enough. Turns out that, yes, it was indeed pretty good.

We tested Honda's latest CR125R motocrosser, which was featured on the
cover 30 years ago… We reported that factory Honda motocrosser and AMA
500cc MX Champion David Bailey had crashed at Huron Cycle Park in Califor-
nia while competing in the CMC Golden State Series and had suffered spinal
injuries, which would ultimately put an end to his racing career… Suzuki's Bob
Hannah was the big winner at the Florida Winter
AM MX at Diamondback Park… Alex Jorgensen
won the Mike Kidd Promotion's Pomona Half
Mile.
