50 Years Ago January 12, 1967
Flat track racing was featured on the cover for our first issue of 1967, 50 years
ago. One of our feature stories was indoor short track racing from the Long
Beach Arena, which attracted nearly 150 total entries. We said the star of the
show was Jim Odom, who passed Gene Romero on the last lap to win the 15-
lap feature race on 250s… Our featured Meet The Racer was Reed Price, the
number-one plate holder in the Southern California desert.
40 Years Ago January 12, 1977
Tom Brooks was featured on the cover of the first issue of 1977. Brooks
won the DRA 20 Mule Team 200 desert race… We tested a couple of CZ
motocrossers—a 250 and a 400—modified by Gran Prix Specialties… We
featured a story on female "biker" Gloria Carter Spann. And who is Gloria
Carter Spann? The sister of U.S. President Jimmy Carter… Ron Turner,
Warren Reid and Goat Breker were some of the names grabbing the
headlines in local racing.
20 Years Ago January 8, 1997
The big news to start 1997 was Jeremy McGrath announcing his plans to
leave Honda and, according to rumors, form his own Nac Nac Enterprises
racing team, riding a Suzuki… Doug Chandler was the talk of the town at
the Dunlop Daytona Tire Test… Our first issue of 1997 featured race coverage
of the Laughlin U.S. Hare Scrambles Championship. Ty Davis took the win…
We featured an interview with Honda's latest factory motocrosser Scott
Sheak… Alan Cathcart tested the 1997 Bimota SB6r.

30 Years Ago January 14, 1987
We traveled to France and the Paul Ricard circuit to ride the all-new 1987
Yamaha FZ750R, which was pictured on the cover 30 years ago… The CMC
Golden State Nationals kicked into gear at SoCal's Sunrise Cycle Park, but rain
made it a soggy one. Kawasaki teammates Ron Lechien and Jeff Ward fought
it out for the 250-class win. Lechien came out on top, with Mike Fisher winning
the 500 class… In Florida, the Florida Winter AM
MX Series got underway with Keith Bowen, Jeff
Stanton and Fred Andrews claiming wins.
