50 Years Ago December 15, 1966
All things racing were again featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago.
Drag racing, TT, road racing and desert racing all had their spot on the
front page… We talked about some of the latest models from Triumph, like the
650cc TR6C Trophy Competition and the Competition Tiger T100C. The 650cc
T120R Bonneville sold for $1360. We thought these bikes would make great
Christmas gifts… We covered the Motorcycle Racers Incorporated (MRI)
banquet. Special Achievement Awards went to
Mel Lacher, Shorty Seabourne, Mike Morton
and Larry Earhart.
40 Years Ago December 14, 1976
Christmas was just around the corner and who else but a motorcycle-wheelying
Santa Claus was featured on the cover 40 years ago… We covered the
American Motocross Finals at Anaheim Stadium. An announced 30,569 fans
turned out for the race that saw Marty Smith come away with the win… At the
final round in Michigan, Marland Whaley wrapped up the NATC U.S. Trials
Championship… Bernie Schreiber won the Trial de Espana VII… We featured
an interview with the only privateer to win a national MX—Steve Wise.
20 Years Ago December 11, 1996
Arenacross was the happening thing in the final weeks of the year, and Chad
Pederson was featured on the cover for winning one of four main events in the
latest round of the AMA/PJ1 Arenacross Series in Memphis. Mike Jones was a
double winner, and Buddy Antunez was another winner… Also sneaking on to
the cover was a static shot of Colin Edwards' Yamaha YZF750 superbike racer
that Alan Cathcart tested… We featured an interview with Scott Russell who
had just finished his first season in the 500cc World Championship.

30 Years Ago December 17, 1986
The big news 30 years ago was Johnny O'Mara making the switch to Team
Suzuki after six years with Team Honda. We featured an interview with the
"O'Show" who was also featured on the cover… The Macau Grand Prix also got
a spot on the front page; Ron Haslam took the win… We covered the 15th Winter
Olympics in Florida, and Damon Bradshaw and
Kenny Kizzar were some of the big winners. Other
winners included Jeff Dement, Brian Swink, Ezra
Lusk, Mike Craig and Jeromy Buehl.
