One of the main photos on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago was Mert
Lawwill (18) in not one of his proudest moments. Despite crashing twice,
Lawwill still came away the winner in the A-Main at the Long Beach indoor flat
track races at Long Beach Arena. Drag racing and a photo from the Hi-Jinx
Poker Run were also featured on the cover… A Christmas gift subscription of
Cycle News cost $6 (hey, it's free now!)… We covered MX racing from Coal
Creek Raceway in Lafayette, Colorado.

Broc Glover was featured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago to
accompany our interview with the 17-year-old future superstar. The title of
the interview was "Broc Glover: Youngest, Fastest Factory Rider"… Roger
DeCoster clinched the 1976 Trans-AMA MX title at Sears Point, a track the
Europeans loved because of its natural-terrain layout. "Keep your bloody
bulldozers away," said Great Britain's Graham Noyce… While wearing full-on
Honda race gear, Jeff Ward helped test our Suzuki RM80, which took the
place of the previous TM75.

Dual sport riding was the theme in issue 47 20 years ago, so we gathered up
the CN staff and went on an adventure with the Suzuki DR650S, ATK 605DS,
Kawasaki KLX650R, KTM 620 LC4 R/XC and Honda XR650L… IMS let
us take a spin on its street-legal Honda XR440L, a bike we would love to have
to this day… We also tested BMW's F650 "Funduro."… More than 2500
riders welcomed back the Elsinore Grand Prix after all the hard work put in by
promoter Goat Breker… Ryan Hughes was crowned King of Bercy.

on the cover 30 years ago… We took a closer look at the use of carburetor

it work?... We interviewed road racer Doug Polen… The Women's Motocross
Nationals played out at Glen Helen Raceway, where Mercedes Gonzales won
both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes… More
than 600 racers turned out for the Kyle Fleming
