P124 50 Years Ago November 24, 1966 All things dirt were featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago… Our main story was our coverage of the Hopetown race at Simi Ranch. We said it was the scene of the first "International Moto-cross scrambles ever held in this country." The race was hosted by the Dirt Diggers Motorcycle Club and the A.C.A. Our coverage said that Malcolm Smith and Paul Hunt were the only local men who could keep the visiting Swede, Torsen Hallman, in sight. Bud Ekins was impressive, as well. Hallman won both the 250 and 500cc International classes. 40 Years Ago November 23, 1976 Our top story 40 years ago was that an audit found that the California Parks & Recreation Department had been mismanaging the Off-Highway Vehicle Fund (aka "Green Sticker" fund)… We had full coverage of the Trans-AMA Motocross from Puyallup, Washington, where Roger DeCoster took the overall, but Gary Semics and Tommy Croft came away with the moto wins… We also showed you up close the bikes of the Trans-AMA Series… We reported that Kenny Roberts had re-signed with Yamaha… In Arizona, the Sierra Club halted the planned Gila Bend to Yuma off-road race. 20 Years Ago November 20, 1996 Kawasaki invited Cycle News to chilly Idaho to sample their new 1997 off-road bikes: the KDX200, KDX220R and the KLX300R four-stroke… We covered the White Brothers World Vet MX Championship at Glen Helen Raceway. The big winner was Erik Kehoe who won the Vet Pro division… Scott Plessinger took the win at the Sunday Creek National Hare Scrambles in Millfield, Ohio… Alan Cathcart tested Fabrizio Pirovano's Corona Ducati 748 SP… We tested the 1997 Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe.
