olton Udall knew he was
in trouble when he hit the
ground while pre-running
just a few days leading up to
the Baja 1000. "As soon as I
landed, I knew that I broke my
collarbone," he said of Tuesday's
crash. "It was pretty painful."
Normally, one does not race
with a broken collarbone, espe-
cially when the race is as long
and grueling as the SCORE
Baja 1000.
But with SCORE rules the way
they are, the rider, or driver, of
record (Udall, in this case) must
either start or finish a race in
order to be eligible for points.
Since Udall's Ox Motorsports
Honda team on the 1X bike had
won the previous three rounds
in the SCORE World Desert
Championship, they did have a
good points lead going into fourth
and final race: the 49th SCORE
Baja 1000.
But to successfully defend
their title and take the champion-
