Roger DeCoster's smiling face was featured on the cover 40 years ago. He
had a good reason to be smiling after winning the Trans-AMA round at Saddle-
back Park. Brad Lackey was second, and Danny LaPorte won the 250cc
support race over Warren Reid… We featured an interview with 22-year-old
privateer motocrosser Pat Richter who had just signed with KTM… Debbie
Evans became the first woman trials expert in the U.S…. We had part three of

them both out… We also tested the all-new Suzuki GSX-R600, which also
got a piece of the cover… Arenacross kicked off in Des Moines; Cliff Palmer
(125cc) and Chad Pederson (250cc) got things started with the big wins…
The final round of the AMA National Enduro Series in Delaware ended in con-
troversy and a protest with Steve Hatch taking the win over Rodney Smith
and Ty Davis.
