CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "Amazing, fantastic, well-deserved—we are the champions of the world!" Team USA – ISDE World Champs! Damn, boys, you did it! John Penton has to be smiling. USA ISDE World Trophy Champi- ons, Taylor Robert overall! The whole team rode their asses off. Amazing, fantastic, well-de- served—we are the champions of the world! Duane Husqvarna Church High fives all around! Thoughts with Nancy, Carolyn, Sarah and the Caselli crew, knowing Rich and Kurt had the dream of resurging the USA effort 10 or so years ago to win the ISDE. Their dream is now true; you know Rich and Kurt are pulling wheelies, beaming above. Great to see Jay Hall and others in the mix again this year. Also know Gunny Clay- poole is flipping out happy. Congratulations to the USA team, and everyone that made it happen. Eric Jordan Yeah, awesome! Been follow- ing the ISDE for over 40 years, it's one of the toughest motor- cycling competitions to win. Bruce Layton Thanks, Team USA. This truly is a glorious day in USA motorcy- cling history! Well done! Phil Abbott This is huge! USA wins the International Six Day Enduro. You hear what I'm saying? They won it! James Ellison Racing And Injuries Fatalities and serious injuries have always played a large part of dirt track racing for as long as I can remember. We say we are prepared for the worst, or justify the risk. "At least he (or she) was do- ing what they loved." I've heard that one a few too many times. The recent two deaths at Santa Rosa really got to me, and I began to wonder what can we do about it? I feel like the AMA should never have eliminated the nov- ice and the junior classes. Cur- rently we are taking 16-year-olds with no "big bike" experience right out of the amateur classes and placing them on 90-horse- power twins on a mile oval. Most of these kids aren't ready for the speed and close racing these machines produce. But give them a season riding local and regional half- miles to earn experience and advancement points would go a long way to training these up-and-coming racers. Even the 450s are incredibly fast and many times turn lap times equal to the experts on 750s. I know the AMA is working hard on changes in rules and promoting which is leading to a resurgence in the popularity of dirt track. New brands are getting involved: Indian, BMW, Ducati, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda and Harley are noticing. But please keep safety in mind. Let these young riders ease into the pro ranks. Hope- fully, they too will have a long career they can look back on. My condolences to the Kainz and McGrane families. Dan Barrick Team ESP Racing Inspiration I cut this picture out of your magazine in the '90s. Now in my mid-50s, it remains an inspi- ration to me. Thanks, Jack, wherever you are.
