VOL. 53 ISSUE 41 OCTOBER 18, 2016 P25 OX MOTORSPORTS TOPS 24 HOURS OF GLEN HELEN T he John Burr Cycle 24 Hour Endurance race at Glen Helen, October 15-16, capped off the facility's 2016 Endurance race series. A total of 39 teams enjoyed a nine-mile course combining the national track, part of the truck track, sand washes and a whole lot of single track. With cool temperatures, a little rain and dense fog, many consider 2016 to be one of the best courses and weather in recent 24-Hour history. The Ox Motorsports team rolled through the scoring chute victorious after 24-hours of changing weather. It wasn't exactly easy for win- ners Colton Udall, Mark Samu- els, Daymon Stokie and Justin Jones; they were down nearly 12 minutes to the John Burr Cycle Fasthouse team nearing the halfway point of the race. Then stator issues struck the John Burr team, causing them to lose a lot of time and relinquish the lead. The Zip-Ty team was able to grab the lead from the John Burr Cycles team for a few laps early in the race, but light issues and stator problems after the sun went down robbed them of precious time as well, eventually knocking them out of conten- tion and back to a fourth-place finish. Sheer speed isn't always the winning recipe for a 24-hour race; it takes consistency, pres- ervation of the bike and a lack of mechanical issues, proven by the Ox Motorsports team. The Precision Concepts team of Thomas Harris, Clay Hen- geveld, Travis Damon, Michael Del Fante, Justin Seeds and Alex Morgan took the Open Expert win and fourth overall aboard a Honda 450. In the 125-250 Expert/ Intermediate class, the team of Trevor Hunter, Preston Campbell, Jarett Megla, Willy Simons, Chance Fullerton and Nick Baehr kept their Yamaha YZ250FX pinned for the win and an impressive second overall. Cycle News spruced up the Honda CRF450X we used at the 10-Hour race and had some fun in the Business class, finishing second and 18th overall. The standout team drawing applause every lap was the Zip- Ty Racing team aboard a KX65. The team of Preston Boespflug, Jett Leasing, Brennen Watson, Reese Monte, Tristtun Alvarez and Dustyn Davis (son of Ty Da- vis) completed 36 laps, finishing 31st overall, keeping the little KX moving the entire time. This was the first time a team on a 65 has ever competed in the 24 Hours of Glen Helen. "It was cool to watch. None of the kids complained and they had a great time. These kids are never going to forget this experi- ence. The youngest kid was seven and the oldest was 12," said Ty Davis.
