50 Years Ago October 20, 1966
Our latest issue 50 years ago got everyone caught up with all of the latest
motorcycle racing and industry news, including a front-page article about a
hard-core motorcycle fan, George Bench, who had collected 20 year's worth
of motorcycle-related news and compiled it into one rather large album… We
tested the new Greeves Challenger, a bike highlighted by its Ceriani forks…
We shared with our readers what it was like to race the Checkers Hare &
Hound. Larry Haley described riding it pucker
bush by pucker bush.
40 Years Ago October 19, 1976
Alex Jorgenson and Jay Springsteen were pictured on the cover battling for the
win at the Ascot National. The 1976 flat track title was in the balance and Springsteen
came away with the number-one plate. He finished out the season 21 points ahead
of Gary Scott… The third round of the Trans-AMA Motocross Series visited Unadilla
and it proved that Roger DeCoster is indeed "The Man" for winning both motos on
the brutal track. Gary Semics was second and Brad Lackey third… Tom Brooks
won the Check Chase Hare & Hound in Parker, Arizona.
20 Years Ago October 16, 1996
Doug Chandler wrapped up the 1996 AMA Superbike National Championship
with a victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His reward? His photo on the
cover of Cycle News… We had coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix. Mick
Doohan chalked up his eighth victory of the season… Troy Corser was
victorious at the World Superbike round in Spain… We tested the 1997 Yamaha
YZ250 motocrosser… Scott Summers clinched his fifth GNCC title in Mt.
Morris, Pennsylvania… Lou Gerencer wrapped up his third 800cc National
Hillclimb Championship.

Rick Johnson was pictured on the cover 30 years ago from the 500cc U.S. GP
at Carlsbad to accompany our interview with the 1986 Supercross and 250cc
National Motocross Champion… We showed you some of the hottest bikes from
Yamaha's 1987 off-road and street lineup; the FZR1000R had everyone talking…
A four-lap run-off was needed to determine who the 1986 National Speedway
Champion would be. Bobby Schwartz outdueled Robert Pfetzing for the
championship… We covered Ed Lojak's win at the
Black Coal National Hare Scrambles.
