IN THE WIND P36 some bigger names the way home on his privateer Yamaha. He was less than three seconds behind Sofuoglu but it could have been more if the Turkish rider—at least a second ahead of everyone except his teammate in qualifying—so desired. "Today, when I saw that Ran- dy had crashed I thought that because I was already champi- on, I could go on to try and win the race," said Sofuoglu. "It was my dream to do that at Magny Cours, but I achieved it here. Luck was with me today and together with our good potential and good performance, we won the title again." The Jerez race victory makes it six wins for the season, 38 for his remarkable, record-breaking career in the 600cc class. Third in Spain was Spanish- based British rider Kyle Smith (CIA Landlord Insurance) who has done more laps at Jerez than most WorldSSP riders. He only just beat PJ Jacobsen over the line, with the Honda World Supersport team rider fourth. "Today was okay," said Ja- cobsen, "and a lot more positive compared to how things went prior to the race. Still, I'm not en- tirely happy because I struggled to find enough grip, so I could not ride the bike like I wanted. I wasn't able to make up more places, and in the end, I simply couldn't make a pass to get me on the podium. Nevertheless, I'm happy with our champion- ship position—we closed in on Krummenacher and Cluzel so we're within a shot of the runner- up spot in the title race. In Qatar we'll give it all to try and make it happen, so I can't wait to get back on track." Axel Bassani (San Carlo team Italia Kawasaki) won the Euro- pean Supersport (ESS) race- within-a-race by finishing fifth overall at Jerez, and with it the championship-within-a-champi- onship, in its inaugural year. Points as they stand for the top regulars are Sofuoglu 196, Krummenacher 129, Cluzel 126, and Jacobsen 122. After a morning warm-up crash, Superstock 1000 FIM Cup points leader Leandro Mer- cado's Aruba.it Racing Ducati failed on the sighting lap for the race. He was out of the running and second-place points-chaser rider Raffaele De Rosa became champion for Althea BMW after securing a safe fifth place in the race. He won by a mere four points after eight rounds. Maximilian Scheib (Graphbikes Easyrace SBK team) from Chile, who races in Spain regularly, was the winner, even after being docked starting positions follow- ing his winning pole on Saturday for an irregular rear brake. Lucas Mahias (Pata Yamaha Official Stock team) scored second place in the race and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was third. Gordon Richie WorldSSP 1. Kenan Sofuoglu (Kaw) 2. Niki Tuuli (Yam) 3. Kyle Smith (Hon) 4. PJ Jacobsen (Hon) 5. Axel Bassani (Kaw) WorldSTK1000 1. Max Scheib (BMW) 2. Lucas Mahias (Yam) 3. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kaw) 4. Roberto Tamburini (Apr) 5. Raffaele DeRosa (BMW) BMW's Max Scheib came away with the World Superstock 1000 win.
