CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "Why do you expect people to come when the championships have already been decided and only a few U.S. riders are in the race?" More On The Mile I had the fortune of attending all six Santa Rosa Mile races, from the 1968 inaugural to Septem- ber's bittersweet final. I remem- ber they all [had] a loose and dusty cushion. Of course, there were crashes (i.e. Nixon's leg- breaker and others) but nothing close to this one. Whether it was track conditions, rider inexperi- ence on twins or other reasons, it would be hard to place blame on anyone. It is racing. The risks [are] known by those who strap on a shoe. The two fatalities notwithstand- ing (thankfully, we, as fans, were not told the extent of their injuries at the track), the day's races were spectacular. The venue is great for us fans. The pits are right next to the stands; there were typical lines for refresh- ments (which is normal), and perfect weather. The one thing we missed was a visit to the pits. Time was a concern. The AMA awards banquet was just a few hours after the races ended, and in another town. (Was it ever right after the final race previously?) We had a great three days at the venue and would have re- turned. Unfortunately, it has been dropped for '17. Tim Tewksbury Trey Canard To KTM Luck seems to elude Canard. One exception was Pala [2010 AMA Pro Motocross finale]. Christophe Pourcel's DNF at the last race gave Trey, who domi- nated the last half of the season, the opportunity to capitalize on Pourcel's championship-ending crash. The next morning, Trey was in the breakfast area at our hotel and treated my son to a few sto- ries and some pictures together. Trey is a very gracious champ and does have the talent and heart to win. Gregory Eddinger This should be a really good fit for Trey! Ryan Dungey, Marvin Musquin, and of course, Roger DeCoster will help him a lot! Robert Stamey All he needs is a little luck and he will be there for both champion- ships. John Peterson Chuck "Feets" Minert RIP "Feets." I followed your career from the very first issue of Cycle News. BSA Catalina Gold Star, a beautiful machine ridden by one of the very best. Al Banta This guy was a maniac—still rac- ing dirt bikes until the very end! Adam Waheed Rest in peace. He was one of the most colorful characters during the golden age of dirt racing in the U.S. He sure knew how to ride that Beezer like no one else. Gary Fackler No Glen Helen MXoN Bring back the Trans-Am series and make it interesting. Why do you expect people to come when the championships have already been decided and only a few U.S. riders are in the race? A four-race series would be great— two east coasts and two west coasts. John Peterson The sport has suffered because bikes are too expensive to both buy and maintain. I'm convinced that's why less people take enough interest to go out and watch. Ten grand for a 450, let alone mods and gear! That's four times what a 250 cost in the '80s, and if it [four-stroke] blows up, forget it. Bring back a low price 250 two-stroke and an elite-level championship they can race in so the local guys can afford to challenge the stars. Oh yeah, and lower ticket prices wouldn't hurt either. Daryl Dickens Have the race at Hangtown or Washougal; we will show up, I know that's for sure. Michael Emberson Letters to the editor can be sent to voices@cyclenews.com.
