VOL. 53 ISSUE 40 OCTOBER 11, 2016 P59 BY DAVID BULMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAY ARCHER T he inaugural SMX Riders' and Manufacturers' Cup is now in the books and while it wasn't quite as big as perhaps the organizers would have liked, there were enough good things about the event to suggest that there is a future for this kind of thing in Europe. The big winners of the evening were KTM and their three riders, Ryan Dungey, Jeffrey Herlings and Marvin Musquin, who stood atop the podium as the brand from Austria cleaned up both the manufacturer's award and the individual prizes for this new race held at the Veltins Arena, home of Schalke 04 Football Club in Germany. Unfortunately there were a lot of empty seats in the sta- dium, with the official attendance given at 10,000, which in a stadium with a capacity of around 54,000 makes it look quite sparse. Ticket prices were pretty high and it being just a cou- ple of weeks after the Motocross of Nations certainly wouldn't have helped the situation, but it could also have been the fact that nobody really knew what to expect from this first edition of "indoor motocross." RIDERS'/MANUFACTURERS' CUP Ryan Dungey (5) led KTM to victory at the inaugural and sparsely attended SMX Riders' and Manufacturers' Cup in Germany. BRIGADE
