It was a potpourri of photos on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. We
had a little bit of everything to illustrate what was in our latest 23-page issue…
One of those was our coverage of the Northwest Scrambles Championship
from Seattle, Washington, and the Jolly Rogers' Motorcycle Track. One of the
big winners was local rider Ken Habeck… We also had coverage from the
Ensenada Grand Prix and Poker Run, of which Cycle News was co-sponsor.
One of the participants was Bob Denver, the star
of the hit television series "Gilligan's Island," and
he brought along some of his Hollywood friends.

A photo from the Austrian woods was pictured on the cover to accompany
our coverage of the ISDT. West Germany took the win and the U.S. finished
10th. The U.S. team was made up of Lars Larsson, Billy Uhl, Jim Hollander,
Kevin LaVoie, Gary Younkins and Mike Hannon… Scot Alex George and
Jean-Claude Chemarin teamed up to win the Bol d'Or Roger DeCoster took
over the points lead in the Pepsi Cola Trans-AMA Motocross at Lake Sugar
Tree MX in Axton Virginia.

Our off-road special issue featured tests on the Husaberg FX501, KTM
300E/XC and Honda XR400, which were all featured in action on the cover.
Also on the cover was our first look of the Suzuki TL1000 V-twin… Billy
Hamil became the fourth American in history to win the World Speedway
Championship… After a two-year losing streak, Team USA returned to the top
at the Motocross des Nations, which was held in Jerez, Spain. Steve Lamson,
Jeff Emig and Jeremy McGrath won back the Chamberlain Trophy.

Honda revealed its 1987 off-road lineup and we were so impressed with the
CR125R that we put it on the cover… We reported that supercross promoter
Mike Goodwin had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and immediately
restructured as Supercross Incorporated (SXI). It was formerly Stadium
Motorsports Corporation (SMC)… We featured a
story on famous road-race tuner Phil McDonald…
Brian Mysercough topped the Trans-Cal MX
Series race at Baylands in Fremont, California.
