CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "I have been there and respect his open display of humility." Cooper Webb: Motocross of Nations In looking at the picture of Cooper Webb on page 13 sobbing out of what I can only think is disap- pointment for feeling like he let his country down at the MXoN, I have to say I love it. Not because I want to see the usually smug and cocky Webb broken down, but because it shows a certain authenticity and sincere passion. I have been there and respect his open display of humility. One point for Webb in my book. Josh Shapiro Santa Rosa Mile I brought four friends who had never been to a motorcycle flat track race to Santa Rosa for the short track and mile track events. I did my best to introduce them in the best ways. In all of my experi- ence "The Mile" has been the best expression of the motorcycle, teamwork and riding, so I have taken every opportunity to bring all who have never been to the mile for the best impression, and one that will last them a lifetime and benefit all of us over time. The four I brought with me re- ally had a great experience. But the mile event should have been at a different track or at least on a different surface. Two yearly events in Sacra- mento would be great. Another race on the same surface at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds would just be wrong. Rick Foley Gosh, what a sad weekend for flat track racing and more importantly the loss of two young promising racers. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of both racers, Charlotte Kainz and Kyle McGrane. God bless them. I hope they're both rippin' it high above us on heaven's endless flat track. Hopefully the sport will learn from this event and make future events safer for all the riders. Could this tragedy have been avoided with bet- ter AMA track preparation and inspection? James "Bonecrusher" Smith As a devoted flat track race fan, and ex-racer in the '70's I was appalled at the carnage during last Sunday's Santa Rosa Mile. Basically, two children died unnecessarily on a dangerous and poorly prepared track. Yes, it was hot, but the heat and the dust were expected and perhaps could have been mitigated in a better way. Dust and poor visibil- ity had to be a factor. I cannot tell you how agonizing it was to watch the events unfold at turn two. Officials responsible for the safety of the racers really need to ensure this does not happen again. Perhaps GNC2 needs to be on the singles only, maybe not return to Santa Rosa. I am so sorry for the families and friends of the fallen racers. Jim McAleer Great coverage of the Santa Rosa Mile, and Dave Hoenig's awesome image on pages 82-83 just blew me away. Also, as a 68-year-old expat living and riding my 2013 Husky TR650 "Terra-ble," I fully enjoy the free subscription. Super thanks. Chris Rea What do I need to do to get some of the pictures you have from the Santa Rosa Mile? I'll wash your cars, all of them. I'll take your kids back and forth to school for a week. Just name it. The shot on page 82-83 says it all. This is what the sport is all about. Next year should be one of the best-ever years for the sport with Polaris/Indian fully committed.
