50 Years Ago October 6, 1966
We pictured a helmet-less young lady, wearing shorts and sneakers, on the
cover of Cycle News 50 years ago to promote an upcoming motorcycle event
in Ensenada B.C. Mexico, which included a grand prix scrambles race and a
poker run… Our table of contents used up half of the front cover… Inside,
we featured coverage of the Hi Jinx M.C. poker run in Norwalk, California… A
full-page ad for the BSA Lightning highlighted its 150 mph speedometer and
"finned alloy" rocker covers. The 654cc two-cylin-
der street bike delivered a claimed 53 horsepower
and weighed 390 pounds.
40 Years Ago October 5, 1976
There was a little bit of everything on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago to
showcase what was inside of the latest issue… We had coverage of the opening
round of the Trans-AMA MX Series from Lexington, Ohio. Kent Howerton drew
first blood… Roger DeCoster led Team Belgium to victory at the Motocross of
Nations in Saint Anthonis, Holland. The home team took a close second; Team
USA was fifth… Jay Springsteen was the big winner at the San Jose Mile.
20 Years Ago October 2, 1996
Greg Zitterkopf was pictured prominently on the cover 20 years ago. The
motocrosser-turned-off-road-racer won the High Sierra AMA National Hare &
Hound in Nevada… Also on the cover was Suzuki's latest RM125 motocrosser…
We tested the '98 KTM 250SX… Scott Parker scored his 75th career victory
at the U.S. Motorcycle Nationals at Knoxville Raceway… Scott Summers won
the Hardrock 100 GNCC in West Virginia… Ty Davis won the Moose Redbird
100 National Enduro in Kentucky… We covered the all-turbocharged Turbo
Motorcycle International Owners' Association Rally in Virginia.

David Bailey was pictured on the cover 30 years ago. Team USA—Bailey, Rick
Johnson and Johnny O'Mara—had just dominated the Motocross of Nations at
Maggiora… Bubba Shobert became the first person in history to win nine GNC
events in a single season after winning the Sacramento Mile… Mark Miller, rid-
ing a Kawasaki, became the first motorcycle rider ever to crack six seconds at
the Dragbike/USA-IHRA Fall Nationals drag races
at Bristol International Dragway during a qualifying
run… We had coverage of the Iron Butt Rally.
