A record crowd came out to Tucson Dragway in Tucson, Arizona, to watch
motorcycle drag racers do their thing late into the night. Loe Payne and his Harley-
Davidson came away with the big win and was featured on the cover 50 years ago…
We covered the Artesia Motor Jockey's 10th Annual Porker Run in Long Beach,
California… Cal Rayborn captured his first national championship, winning again at
Carlsbad Raceway… We had big coverage of the Mt. Garfield National Hillclimb
that was hosted by the Muskegon Motorcycle Club of
Muskegon, Michigan.

interview with 19-year-old Larry Roeseler, the rising star in the desert… We
previewed our complete 1976 ISDE Team, which included David Ashley, Fred
Bellman, Charles Bethards, Ron Bishop, Dick Burleson, Rod Bush, Dane
Leimbach, Lars Larsson, Mike Hannon, Tom Penton and Chris Carter…
We showed you how to rebuild your MX bike's blown-out Marzocchi gas/oil
shocks… We compared the MV Agusta 750, Ducati Desmo 750SS, Moto
Guzzi 850, Laverda "Jota," and Laverda 1000 street bikes.

We gave you our first impressions of the 1997 Yamaha YZ125, Honda CR125
and Kawasaki KX250 motocrossers in the latest issue of Cycle News 20 years
ago… We covered the World Superbike Road Race from Assen that Carl Fogarty
won… Frederic Bolley won the final round of the 250cc World Championship MX
Series in Roggenburg, Switzerland. Stefan Everts wrapped up the title but not
officially. In an earlier race, a fuel sample that was taken from his bike failed a test
(too much octane) and the legal wrangling had yet to be ironed out.

a factory team rider with Kawasaki. The transition was made even more difficult
when his mechanic, Bob Pearson, was killed in a car accident… Doug Chandler
nipped Scott Parker at the San Jose Mile… New Haven Suzuki topped the AMA/
MotoWorld U.S. Endurance Series round at Road
Atlanta… In the locals section, we reported that
