TT racing from Ascot Park topped our headlines in 1966. Gene Romero and
Eddie Mulder put on a show in the expert main as they battled for the win.
Romero overtook Mulder with five laps to go and went on to take the victory…
Drag racing from Irwindale, California, also made front-page news with top
performances by Leo Payne and Bob Michales… We featured a single-page
pictorial from the Peoria TT… We also covered the Cerebral Palsy Benefit TT
Scrambles from Salinas, California.
40 Years Ago September 7, 1976
Racing action from the Indy Mile doubleheader was featured on the cover 40
years ago. Mike Kidd and Jay Springsteen fought it out all weekend and both
were rewarded with wins… We called it the Battle of New Orleans and said it
was "…one of the most tension filled and drama packed days in U.S. motocross
history." When all was said and done, Kent Howerton came away with the
500cc National MX Championship over Gary Semics… Heikki Mikkola won
the 250cc World MX title in Sweden by one point.
20 Years Ago September 4, 1996
Aaron Yates made front-page news for winning his first-ever AMA Superbike
National at Sears Point… For only the second time ever, the U.S. Trophy
Team finished on the podium at the ISDE, in Hameenlinna, Finland. And,
for the first time ever, a U.S. team won the Club Team division with Daytona
Dirt Riders' Guy Cooper, Fred Hoess and John Nielsen… Kevin Atherton
scored his third GNC win of the season at Hagerstown Speedway… Jeremy
McGrath won the Binghamton 250cc National MX and climbed to within two
points of Jeff Emig with one round left.
