We covered the 25-lap Short Track National at Santa Fe Speedway in Willow
Springs, Illinois. Bart Markel took the win for his second victory of the 1966
season. It was also his 17
th
national victory of his career… We also covered the
fastest motorcycles on the planet at Bonneville. We reported that, "a torpedo-
shaped motorcycle driven by Robert Leppan of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, set a
world speed record for cycles of 245.667 miles an hour." It was a twin-Triumph-
engined Gyronaut X-1… Eddie Mulder scored his
fourth straight win at the Peoria TT.
40 Years Ago August 31, 1976
Gary Nixon and Irv Kanemoto were pictured on the cover to accompany our
"special road race issue."… Danny LaPorte traded moto wins with Broc Glov-
er to win the 125cc National MX in Houston, Texas. Bob Hannah was fourth
overall but he came away with the 1976 Championship… In St. Petersburg,
Florida, Team Kawasaki's Gary Semics went 1-1 to win the 500cc National MX
over Kent Howerton... Steve Eklund finished ahead of Gary Scott and the
rest of the pack to win the Peoria TT… Mitch Mayes won the SCORE World
Championship at Riverside International Raceway.

Scott Parker and Kevin Atherton shared the cover 20 years ago, Parker
for winning the Indy Mile and Atherton the DuQuoin Mile… Steve Lamson
clinched the 125cc Motocross Championship at Washougal… Alex Criville
won the 500cc Grand Prix and Brno… Sixteen-year-old Ricky Carmichael
won the 250/Open A Stock class to record his ninth career title at Loretta
Lynn's. Other champs included Casey Johnson (125cc A Mod.), Danny
Smith (125 B Mod.), Justin Buckelew (85cc Mod. 14-15), Davi Millsaps
(51cc 7-8 Stock) and Ernesto Fonseca (125 Stock 12-15).

We tested the 1987 Yamaha YZ125 motocrosser, which was featured in ac-
tion on the cover 30 years ago… Erik Kehoe and Jeff Ward won the 125 and
500cc classes, respectively, at the Washougal National MX, but Micky Dy-
mond (125cc) and David Bailey (500cc) wrapped up the titles… Rick Sim-
met, Denny Stephenson and Bryan Jernigan were the big winners at Loretta
Lynn's. Other winners included Donny Schmit
(250/Open Pro-Am), Jeff Stanton (250 A), Ty
Davis (125 A) and Ezra Lusk (65cc Stock 7-11).
