MOTOCROSS: WHO'S GOING WHERE
N
ow that the 2016
Lucas Oil AMA
Pro Motocross Cham-
pionship is nearly
over, it's time to
start thinking ahead.
There's been plenty
of talk about who is
going where for the
next season—here's
what we know so far.
We reported some
time back that Trey
Canard was headed
to Red Bull KTM,
and Ken Roczen was
headed to factory
Honda. We got some
confirmation on that
this past week when
Honda issued a press
release announc-
ing that Big Red had
re-signed Cole Seely
for another two years. Chances
are pretty good if Honda was
re-signing Canard, they'd have
waited to issue the PR until they
could announce both. Since
Roczen will become Seely's new
teammate—on what's rumored
to be a Damon Bradshaw-like
five-year contract—Honda won't
be able to announce that until
October 1. The same goes for
Canard and his KTM deal. Con-
tracts tend to run from October
1 through September 30 in AMA
Motocross, so anyone changing
manufacturers will likely be an-
nounced then, at least officially.
Interestingly enough, Roczen's
move to Honda will mark the
second consecutive time that
he's won a 450cc National MX
Championship on one machine,
only to run the number-one plate
on a different motorcycle the
following year.
At Budds Creek, the GEICO
Honda team announced that
RJ Hampshire was returning to
the team. Jordon Smith should
be back, as well. The surprise
for 2017 sounds like it's going
to be Jeremy Martin joining the
team. The two-time 250MX
National Champion was always
entertaining the idea of staying
in the 250cc class for one more
year regardless, and after a deal
to go to RCH (presumably on
450s) fell through, rumor has
it he found the market for his
services in the 450cc class to
be pretty soft. But the GEICO
team is trying to get back to
their winning ways, and Martin
is a proven winner. It should be
a good fit. If Martin can win a
One of the biggest questions in MX
right now is where will this guy land
in 2017? Will James Stewart retire or
sign with a new team?
