VOL. 53 ISSUE 32 AUGUST 16, 2016 P65 BY STEVE COX PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB KOY E arly in the 2016 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships, we were wondering if the dominance of Soaring Eagle/Jimmy John's Su- zuki's Ken Roczen and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Joey Savatgy would continue past round one. Roczen has been known to get off to fast series starts, only to run out of steam as the series progresses, and he was facing off against one of the greatest champions in the sport's history in Red Bull KTM's Ryan Dungey. As for Savatgy, he hasn't had a lot of years competing at the very top of professional rac- ing, and he was facing off against a pair of proven championship winners in Yamalube/Star Rac- ing Yamaha's defending two-time series champion Jeremy Martin and his teammate and two-time 250SX West Supercross Cham- pion Cooper Webb. In the nine rounds that have now been run since the check- ered flags flew at Hangtown last May, Roczen has continued to race almost entirely unchal- lenged, losing a total of just four out of 18 motos, and Savatgy ran into a brick wall named Cooper Webb. As it sits, Roczen now has a very realistic shot at clinching his second 450MX National Cham- pionship this coming weekend at Budds Creek, and Webb could do it as early as moto one in Maryland. Justin Barcia (51) and Eli Tomac (3) had their chances of winning but couldn't hold off Ken Roczen (94). CONCLUSIONS leaders going 1-1 week.
