50 Years Ago August 11, 1966
Our feature story 50 years ago was our coverage of the 50-mile Lightweight and
110-mile National Championship races at Greenwood Raceway in Des Moines,
Iowa. Gary Nixon won them both, with Cal Rayborn finished second in both races.
Sammy Tanner was 17th in the National… Silver Lakes Park made its debut in
Corona, California. More than 300 riders turned out for the track's first race—a half
mile—that was hosted by the Gripsters M.C… We covered plenty of dirt track racing
from Washington, Oxnard and Ascot.
40 Years Ago August 10, 1976
Steve Baker was featured in all his glory on the cover of Cycle News 40
years ago. The AMA Grand National Championship Camel Pro Series visited
Laguna Seca and Baker dominated both races, toping Gary Nixon by 17.7
seconds in the first race and Kenny Roberts by 26.5 seconds in the second
race. Roberts was second-best on the day after going 3-2. Reg Pridmore won
the Superbike Production race… Bob Hannah won the 125cc National MX at
Delta Motorsport Park in Ohio.
20 Years Ago August 7, 1996
The CN staff went on a road trip 20 years ago. We grabbed the biggest and
baddest cruisers on the market and headed to Las Vegas and the Hard Rock
Café, where we tested what these bikes do best—cruise. And what better
way to cruise than down the Las Vegas Strip?… We also had coverage of the
Troy National MX, where Jeremy McGrath got back to winning in the 250cc
class… Rich King won the Oklahoma City Half Mile… We went "billet" on our
project Yamaha Royal Star.

30 Years Ago August 13, 1986
The big news 30 years ago was the introduction of the 1987 YZ motocrossers,
and the YZ250 and YZ80 were featured on the cover… Fred Merkel and
Randy Renfrow were the top riders at the AMA Camel Pro Series road race
round at Mid-Ohio… We covered David Bailey's victory at Binghamton, New
York… We were also on hand to see Doug Chandler come away with the win
at the Santa Fe TT… In Sweden, John van
den Berk won the 125cc MX Grand Prix…
Team USA won the American Cup Speedway
Challenge at Ascot.
