P116 50 Years Ago August 4, 1966 Dirt track racing from Ascot Park made front-page news 50 years ago. Ralph White came from behind, caught leader Sammy Tanner on the last lap and then passed him for the win, his fifth of the year. White was pictured on the cover… We showed you what kind of motorcycles Steve McQueen had parked in his garage. He had a few, including a Triumph/Matisse and a Dunstall Dominator… Speaking of actors, we reported that Dean Jones suffered a compound fracture of his pelvis after striking a coyote with his motorcycle on a dirt road in Mexico. 40 Years Ago August 3, 1976 One of our most memorable covers ever. It featured Jimmy Weinert and Tony DiStefano having a little fun at the Superbowl of Motocross at the L.A. Coliseum. We described the photo: "Superballs—or, did Tony jam the Jammer?" Can-Am's Jimmy Ellis took the win with 1-1-2 finishes and Pierre Karsmakers finished second with a 2-4-3 in front of 73,000 fans. Weinert took the championship… We covered the Wagner Cup World Championship Trials in Gold Bar, Washington, where Great Britain's Martin Lampkin took the win just ahead of American Marland Whaley. 20 Years Ago July 31, 1996 World Superbike from Laguna Seca was the hot topic 20 years ago and winners John Kocinski and Anthony Gobert were featured on the cover. Miguel DuHamel and Matt Wait were also winners over the Laguna weekend… Greg Albertyn finally got his first outdoor National MX win since leaving the World MX scene when he went 2-2 in the 250cc class at Unadilla… Mick Doohan dominated the British Grand Prix at Donington Park… Chad Reed won the Mini Open (7-16) class at the Good Times Amateur National at Moiser.
