40 Years On
July 25 marks 40 years since the
late, great Barry Sheene clinched
his first World 500cc Championship,
riding for the factory Suzuki team
on a RG500 at the 1976 Swedish
Grand Prix. Incredibly, such was
the World Championship schedule
in 1976, Sheene only contested six
rounds to win the title. He would go
on to win the 1977 championship as
well, but then a certain American
named Kenny Roberts made the trip
to Europe for 1978, and the rest, as
they say, is history.
