CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "We are seeing one of the all-time greats in his prime." Not Marquez While Marc Marquez rode with superb skill in the drying conditions at the German Grand Prix, it wasn't his "strat- egy" to have a slick rear on the second bike—someone in the garage made that call. You could see Marc look back at the tire exiting the pits and seemingly do a double-take seeing it wasn't an intermediate. Some- times teams make great (lucky) calls and sometimes (Phillip Island) they leave you out too long and you're black-flagged. And, on a side note to the comment from the person who hates the rain races—it's the op- posite for me. While I don't like the injuries, the excitement is a level higher! Jon Dowd Archives: Wes Cooley It was great to see the story on Wes Cooley. He was my favorite rider, and as a teen, I was at Sears Point that day and witnessed his big crash in turn one. He got flicked off at well over 100 mph and flew straight into the tire wall without ever touching the ground. The sound he made when he hit is permanently etched on my mind. I literally got sick, and went home certain that I wit- nessed the end of him. To learn of his survival was wonderful, and although it was evident that he was probably not going to race again, at least he made it! What a stud. Thanks Mitch, for bringing him back to the track. I wish I was there. He is a true icon and a hero to many. Howard Halterman Washougal MX Great ride for Eli Tomac at Washougal and I'm glad he's keeping it interesting. I fear it's too little too late, though, for this season. How smart is Ken Roczen? He has the championship in mind and backs off when he needs so as not to crash out. We are seeing one of the all-time greats in his prime. I think he would have beat Ryan Dungey this year anyway. Kevin Burner Roczen is taking a page out of Dungey's formula for winning championships: build a big points advan- tage and then go into "low-risk mode." It takes speed, patience and smarts to win a champion- ship that way. He doesn't care about demolishing the field by 30 seconds or more. All he cares about is finishing in front of second place. Barring any mechanicals or major crashes he can keep it in the comfort zone the rest of the summer. Smart rider. Terry Heath Joey Savatgy's move in the second moto is an example of why he will never have the num- ber-one plate. Cooper Webb's action after is an example of why he will.
