50 Years Ago July 28, 1966
Eddie Mulder made front-page news for winning the 50-lap National TT
Championship at Ascot Park in Gardena, California. It was his third straight
victory. Up for grabs was a $6000 purse, $1910 of which went into Mulder's
pocket. We also featured a short profile on Mulder who was making a name for
himself on the national scene… The Nomads of Gardena M.C. held its monthly
Poker Run. At their destination, they were supposed to go panning for gold in
the San Gabriel River but cooled off in the water
instead.
40 Years Ago July 27, 1976
Sonny Burres was featured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago to
accompany our report of the Castle Rock TT National. However, it wasn't
Burres spraying the champagne afterward, it was instead Steve Joyner who
got that honor, though he did get some help with podium finishers Ted Boody
and Randy Skiver… AMA Motocross headed to St. Peters, Missouri, where
Honda's Pierre Karsmakers posted the win over Steve Stackable and Gary
Semics… We covered the WERA Ontario (California) National where David
Emde piled on the wins.

A photo of winner Alessandro Gramigni leading Larry Pegram and Miguel
DuHamel at the Brainerd Superbike National was featured on the cover 20
years ago… We covered the Amateur Dirt Track Nationals at Lake Odessa's I-96
Speedway, and the big winner was Bryan Bigelow… We chatted with PACE Motor
Sports' Gary Becker and Charlie Mancuso about the future of supercross…
We said that 17-year-old Sebatien Tortelli was well on his way to becoming the
youngest MX World Champion after winning the 125 GP in Nismes, Belgium.

Ducati's new Paso 750 was featured predominantly on the cover 30 years
ago… The world converged at Unadilla for the 250cc USGP at Unadilla, which
came down to a second-moto showdown between Bob Hannah and Johnny
O'Mara for the overall. O'Mara had it in the bag until his bike ran out of gas
on the last lap, and Hannah rode past him for the win and the overall victory…
Bubba Shobert won the inaugural West Virginia
"Thunder in the Hills" Parkersburg Half Mile… Ty
Davis won the Micky Thompson Off-Road GP at
the L.A. Coliseum.
