The big news of the week in motorcycle racing was Babe DeMay winning his
first national championship race, the 7 Mile National held in Lincoln, Illinois, just
ahead of Bart Markel and Fred Nix who filled out the podium… We featured
the Spirit of 76 ACA road race at Willow Springs, which took place over the
Fourth of July weekend holiday… We also had race coverage from central Cali-
fornia and the Atascadero Ramblers Scrambles… The Mesa Racing Asso-
ciation was formed in San Diego to host half-mile
oval and TT racing.
40 Years Ago July 13, 1976
Jay Springsteen was featured on the cover 40 years ago for taking top honors
at the Albuquerque Mile… Gerrit Wolsink continued to dominate the 500cc
Motocross GPs. After winning both motos the week before at Carlsbad, the
Dutch dentist won both motos at the Labatt's Grand Prix of Canada… The 125cc
National MX Series rolled into Maryland and the Appalachian Highlands Park,
where Steve Wise held off Honda teammate Marty Smith to take the victory…
Gunnadey Moisseev edged out Heikki Mikkola for the win at the 250cc Brit-
ish MX Grand Prix.

The World Superbike Championship was coming to town at Laguna Seca. Our
special World Superbike Preview issue featured a photo of Colin Edwards on
the cover to accompany our interview with the home-country hero… Mick Doo-
han captured his fourth World Championship Road Race win at the Dutch Grand
Prix… Scott Parker topped the GNC round at Allen County Fairgrounds in
Lima, Ohio… Troy Corser won the World Superbike at Brno… Randy Hawkins
zeroed in on the win at the Little Rhody Enduro in Rhode Island.

We featured a photo of Randy Mamola on the cover 30 years ago to accom-
pany our interview with the road race GP title contender… We had coverage
of the 500cc AMA National MX Series opener and 125cc round from RedBud.
Rick Johnson edged out David Bailey for the 500cc-class win, while Micky
Dymond extended his points lead in the 125cc class with a 1-2 victory. Keith
Bowen was second… Larry Roeseler won the
Washington Evergreen Two-Day Qualifier in Capitol
Forest… Wayne Gardner won the Dutch TT.
