50 Years Ago July 7, 1966
One of our feature stories 50 years ago was our race coverage of the Cal-
Nevada 100 Mile Hare Scrambles. Larry Bergquist, riding a BSA, took the
win. We mentioned 13-year-old Jack Johnson who had previously won the Trail
Bike class twice. This time, he suffered a mechanical DNF… We covered Eddie
Mulder's win at the National Championship Warm-Up race at Ascot… This
week's Meet The Racers featured dirt tracker Guy Louis… We had a report on
the Lodi Cycle Bowl Benefit For Kids race.
40 Years Ago July 6, 1976
Our cover story 40 years ago was the Woman's National Motocross National
from Indian Dunes in Valencia, California, and pictured on the cover was winner
Sue Fish splashing through the mud… Jay Springsteen became the 12th
different winner in as many events when he topped the Charity Newsies in
the Grand National/Camel Pro Series… Roger DeCoster won both motos of
the West German 500cc Motocross Grand Prix in Beuern, West Germany…
Gaylon Moiser was winning MX in the local SoCal scene.
20 Years Ago July 3, 1996
Jeremy McGrath and Steve Lamson shared the cover of Cycle News 20 years
ago for winning the 250 and 125cc National MX rounds at Southwick… Scott
Parker was the big winner at the Sedalia Half Mile in Missouri… We showed you
close-up photos of the all-new Honda CR250R with its first aluminum dual-box-
section frame that was four pounds lighter than the previous steel frame… We
profiled 250cc World Champion Max Biaggi… We featured a test on the TM
300 Enduro… Scott Plessinger won the Starvation Point GNCC.

Belgian Andre Malherbe from the World Championship 500cc MX in Canada
was pictured on the cover 30 years ago. But topping the headlines was the
500cc MX Grand Prix from Carlsbad. It was the final U.S. GP to be held at
the historic site, and Rick Johnson came away with double-moto wins. David
Bailey took second and Jeff Ward third, making it an all-American podium…
We covered Kelly Moran and Sam Ermolenko's
second-place finish at the World Speedway Paris
Championship from West Germany… Ronnie
Jones won the Lima Half Mile.
