HOLCOMBE DOMINATES GP OF SWEDEN
F
actory Beta's Steve Hol-
combe put the disappoint-
ment of the previous World
Enduro Championship round
behind him and celebrated
a double victory at the GP of
Sweden in Enkoping. After a
disappointing DNF on day two
at the GP of Finland, Holcombe
succeeded in dominating the
forests of Sweden to take a flaw-
less victory. Though he is still
third in points, he was able to
tighten up the gap on the Endu-
roGP championship leaders.
"It was a difficult day, but I
was able to stay upright and I
think that was the key to my re-
sult," Holcombe remarked after
day one.
Day two was trickier for Hol-
combe, however. "Everything
was going great right up until the
last enduro test," he recalled.
"I pushed just a little too hard
and paid for it. I crashed once,
picked myself up and then
crashed again. It all came down
to the final motocross test then
and I went for it. I did enough
to get the win, and some very
important championship points."
Sherco rider Matt Phillips
came into Sweden tied on
points with TM's Eero Remes,
but thanks to a solid pair of
second-place finishes, Phillips
was able to pull clear in the
championship.
Remes followed his third-
place finish on day one with
a fifth-place on day two just
behind KTM's Nathan Watson.
It marked the first class
win (E1) of the series
for Watson, and put
an end to Remes' win
streak.
American Taylor
Robert improved on
his results from last
week with seventh- and
sixth-place EnduroGP
finishes in Sweden. He
also got back onto the E2 class
podium with runner-up finishes
behind Phillips each day.
In the Women's division, Laia
Sanz got back to her winning
ways, beating Maria Franke and
day-one winner Jane Daniels on
Sunday. It marked Sanz' first win
of the championship. CN
