Triumph made front-page news for setting a new quarter-mile record at Lions
Drag Strip in California. Jim Cook, we said, "…pulled all the stops out for a drag
strip and world record of 9.74 E.T. and 156.52 mph"… Also making front-page
headlines was Buddy Elmore, who, on his Daytona-winning Triumph, took
first place in Laconia, New Hampshire, in a 100-mile road race… Speaking of
100-mile-long races, 17-year-old Lonnie Peterson won the Greyhounds' Hare &
Hound… Eddie Mulder won his first major road
race at Carlsbad Raceway.
40 Years Ago June 22, 1976
A photo from the Baja 500 was featured on the cover of Cycle News 40
years ago. Larry Roeseler and A.C. Bakken made up the winning duo…
Corky Keener was the big winner at the Full House Cycle Classic Half Mile in
Delaware… Mike Bell was the top rider at the Mammoth Motocross… Kent
Howerton won the 500cc National MX round in Axton, Virginia… We covered
Marty Smith's victory at the MX 125cc Grand Prix of Denmark… Jack Penton
took top honors at the Two-Day Qualifier in Weston, Oregon.
20 Years Ago June 19, 1996
Mick Doohan was featured on the cover 20 years ago for winning the
French Grand Prix, and Tom Reiser got a piece of the cover for topping the
White Rose National Hillclimb. Hans Neilsen was also pictured for winning
the Italian Speedway GP… Ty Davis and Paul Krause combined efforts
to win the Baja 500… Rodney Smith and Chris Smith battled it out at the
Idaho City Two-Day Qualifier. Smith—Rodney Smith that is—took the win over
Smith… Steve Hatch won the Boyers GNCC.

We featured photos from the Baja 500 and the Magoo Invitational
Motocross on the cover 30 years ago. Garth Sweetland and Scot Harden
teamed up to win Baja. Roger DeCoster, Jeff Ward, Marty Smith, Billy
Grossi and Brad Lackey were some of the stars that came to Hangtown to
raise money for injured motocrosser Danny "Magoo" Chandler… Eddie
Lawson won the Austrian GP… Transplanted Australian Jimmy Ellis made
the locals proud by winning the Manjimup 15000
International MX near Perth. Americans Willy
Simons and Greg Zitterkopf went 5-6.
