50 Years Ago June 16, 1966
Sammy Tanner made front-page news for scoring another upset win in the
Grand National Championship at the Heidelberg Half Mille near Pittsburgh.
Tanner took his second straight win, edging out favorite Bart Markel in front of
nearly 15,000 fans… Ascot Park in Gardena, California, continued to be the hot
place to be for racing on Friday nights. This week, it was Dan Haaby and Gene
Romero putting on the show on the half-mile track. Haaby scored the win in the
final over Ralph White.
40 Years Ago June 15, 1976
The new 250cc Motocross National Champion was featured on the cover of
Cycle News 40 years ago. Nineteen-year-old Tony DiStefano clinched the
title with a second-place performance at Southwick. Honda-mounted Pierre
Karsmakers won that day but Suzuki's Tony D was the champ… Rookie Expert
Steve Eklund became the eighth different rider in eight races to win a round of
the AMA GNC Camel Pro Series, this one coming in Pontiac, Michigan… Brad
Lackey and Roger DeCoster traded moto wins in Finland, but Gerrit Wolsink
got the overall 500cc MXGP victory.
20 Years Ago June 12, 1996
Our Grand National Dirt Track Special Issue featured Jay Springsteen on
the cover. Some of our dirt track stories included an interview with Rich
King, and a feature on the Total Control Racing Team… Rain caused
havoc at the AMA Superbike National at Mid-Ohio. After a couple of tries,
Yoshimura Suzuki's Pascal Picotte came away with a wet win… Will Davis
won the Starved Rock Grand National at La Salle Speedway in Illinois…
Rodney Smith came away with the overall victory at the Little Burr Two-Day
ISDE Qualifier in Ohio.

30 Years Ago June 18, 1986
We featured a photo of Ricky Graham in action on the cover of Cycle News
30 years ago to accompany our interview with the privateer dirt tracker… The
final round of the Insport/AMA Nippondenso Supercross Series played out at
the Los Angeles Coliseum, where Honda's Ricky Johnson took the victory.
Johnson had already clinched the title… Wayne Rainey won the Honda Super
Cycle Weekend Formula One race at Road America ahead of Randy Renfrow
and Kork Ballington… Terry Cunningham
won the Redneck National Enduro in Saline,
Louisiana.
