Harley-Davidson dirt trackers were featured on the cover of Cycle News 40
years ago. The photo was taken at the San Jose Mile… We ran the first photo
of Honda's all-new GL-1000 LTD… Gary Scott won the Louisville round of
the AMA GNC/Camel Pro Series, becoming the seventh different winner of
the season—and it was the seventh race of the season... We covered Kent
Howerton's victory in the 500cc National MX Series in Mexico, New York. He
traded moto wins with Bob Hannah. Don Kudalski won the Support class.
20 Years Ago June 5, 1996
Mick Doohan and Jeff Emig made the front page 20 years ago. Doohan
scored another victory at the Italian Grand Prix, and Emig put an end to
Jeremy McGrath's early win streak in the outdoor MX National at High
Point… We reported that Smokin' Joe's Honda's Steve Crevier was seriously
injured in a personal watercraft accident in Vancouver, B.C… We featured an
interview with road racer Anthony Gobert who said he also wanted to win a
supercross championship before his racing days were through.

A classic photo by Henny Ray Abrams of Rick Johnson was featured on the
cover 30 years ago. Johnson clinched the 250cc National MX Championship
that day in Colorado. Jeff Ward took the class win, while Keith Bowen topped
the 125cc class… Scott Parker claimed the big win a the Louisville Half Mile…

50 Years Ago June 6, 1966
The AMA announced that it had a new Secretary, which made front-page
news 50 years ago. William T. Berry took over for the former Secretary Lin
Kuchler… Also making the cover was Gene Romero for winning the latest
TT race at Ascot Park… Sammy Tanner returned to Ascot to win the Expert
Half-Mile main event… We also covered all of the A.C.E. Moto-cross action
from Irvine (Saddleback), California, and some of the names making the news
were Walt Axthelm, George Walker and Lon
Peterson.
