We reported that Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty said that he recognized the
need for an educational and recreational motorcycle facility within the City of
Los Angeles… Malcolm Smith and Reed Price made the front-page headlines
for winning their classes in a desert race in the Coachella Valley in California…
Road racing returned to Riverside International Speedway. More than 120
racers signed up to do battle on the world-famous racetrack… We featured
Mert Lawwill in our Meet The Racers section.
40 Years Ago May 25, 1976
Rex Beauchamp and Jay Springsteen were pictured on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago mixing it up at the San Jose Mile. Beauchamp came away
with the victory… We said Bob Hannah's win at the 250cc National Motocross
in Maryland was no fluke. Hannah's 2-1 out-did Jimmy Wienert's 1-2 for the
overall victory. Tony DiStefano maintained his points lead… We covered the
Gila Bend Grand Prix won by Yamaha rider Austen Haydis… Gaston Rahier
won the 125cc MX Grand Prix in Great Britain. It was his third victory in a row.
20 Years Ago May 22, 1996
A photo of Jeremy McGrath and Greg Albertyn at the Glen Helen National
MX took precedence on the cover 20 years ago. McGrath took his second
win in a row, while Kevin Windham (also pictured on the cover) captured
his first career national MX win in the 125cc class… Mick Doohan also got
a piece of the cover for winning the Spanish Grand Prix… Carl Fogerty won
the World Superbike round at Hockenheimring… We featured an interview
with Greg Albertyn… We covered Mike Young's win in the Four-Stroke
Nationals at Hangtown.

was the big winner at the Big Bear 100 National
