he was nearly a full second
quicker than Roczen (fourth
quickest) and nearly three
seconds quicker than Dungey
10th quickest, though Dungey
was the quickest in the second
session) and just looked super
aggressive on the track like he
did in 2015. But bad starts—12th
in the first moto and 11
t
h in the
second—ruined his day. He still
rode well coming up through the
pack for a pair of fourths that
netted him third overall, but he
later said that it was more than
just bad starts that got him.
"In the first moto, I was buried
[in the pack] a little and was eat-
ing a lot of roost. I eventually got
to third place but wasn't comfy
at all really," Tomac said. "I didn't
have very good lines and was
missing some insides. It was a
little disappointing. We made a
few little [suspension] changes
and came back for moto two

one end of the bike but on the
other end it kind of felt a little bit
goofier. I don't know, I was just
kind of searching all day in the
motos. But in practice it felt re-
ally good."
Roczen said that he didn't feel
any extra pressure from the high
expectations that many people
put on him, based on his results
last year. "This is my sixth Hang-
town now and was just in the
zone today; no nerves."
For Roczen, he got down to
business when it really mattered.
He was explosive right away,
passing Dungey, Canard and
Dungey in the first moto and 14
seconds in the second.
"Today felt good, we were in
a way better position than we
were last year, especially com-
ing in with that injury," Roczen
said. "I was just really happy with
the bike and the way the team is
working together. I can focus on
holeshotter Cole Seely before
the first lap was over in the first
moto, and again Dungey in the
second moto. He dropped the
hammer right away both times
and opened up big leads, and
then he went into manage-
ment mode the rest of the way,
finishing six seconds ahead of
